Rain in your hands

The name HYETOS comes from the ancient Greek word "ὑετός" (hyetos), meaning rain.

In polytonic Greek, the word begins with an upsilon carrying a rough breathing mark (ὑ-). In ancient Greek, this mark signalled an initial breath sound — an h before the vowel.

For that reason, in Latin and international transliteration, "ὑετός" is rendered as "hyetos". The initial H is not decorative — it is the written memory of that ancient breath.

A small trace of ancient pronunciation that lets the name stay close to its Greek root while remaining readable in an international, English-speaking context.

Ancient Greek tradition also preserves the brief invocation «ὕε, κύε» (hye, kye) — two words, one addressed to the sky and one to the earth, calling for the rain to fall and the earth to bear fruit. Those two words hold the whole spirit of HYETOS: rain as a source of life, calm and renewal.

Rain, as a natural phenomenon, is associated with calmness, renewal and a deep connection with nature. With the same sensitivity, the HYETOS Rain Instrument reproduces that elemental quality through a sound that recalls rain itself.
